Biography

I’m an Associate Solicitor specialising in asbestos and occupational disease claims. I represent individuals and families affected by illnesses caused by workplace exposures, often many years after the exposure first occurred.

I have particular experience in respiratory disease litigation, acting for clients diagnosed with conditions including occupational asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hypersensitivity pneumonitis, silicosis, lung cancer and asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and diffuse pleural thickening. I also represent clients with other occupational illnesses, including hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and dermatitis.

In addition, I have acted for current and former members of the Armed Forces, including individuals who have suffered serious health consequences as a result of carbon monoxide exposure.

I also have significant experience assisting with complex occupational disease group litigation.

My role involves investigating how and why an illness developed, obtaining expert evidence, advising clients and their families, and pursuing compensation to help provide financial security and answers about how their illness was caused.  I understand that a serious diagnosis can be overwhelming and that bringing a legal claim may feel daunting. I aim to make the process as straightforward as possible by providing clear, practical advice and supporting my clients every step of the way while working to achieve the best possible outcome for them and their families.

What inspired you to get into law?

Growing up, I enjoyed investigating things and always thought that I wanted to work in the police. However, through my studies and work experience, I was introduced to a range of legal services and soon realised that there was much more to law than we see in TV dramas!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

The most rewarding aspect of my role is helping people during what is often one of the most difficult periods of their lives. Many of my clients have received a life-changing diagnosis and are facing significant uncertainty about the future. Being able to provide clear advice, secure financial support and help obtain answers about how their illness was caused is incredibly important.

It is particularly rewarding when clients tell me that I have helped make a stressful and complex process easier to understand and manage. Knowing that I have been able to support someone through a difficult time and help them achieve a positive outcome makes the work I do worthwhile.

What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?

No day is the same at Irwin Mitchell. I enjoy working on a varied case load and attending regular training to keep up to date with developments in the law. I am fortunate to work with friendly and approachable colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge and experience so that we can achieve the best possible outcome for our clients.

What do you do away from the office?

Outside of work I can usually be found in the dance studio, the gym or spending time with family and friends.

“We cannot thank Rebecca Wood and Simone Hardy at Irwin Mitchell enough for the incredible support they have given us throughout our claim. Following my husband, Glen Dalby’s, diagnosis of mesothelioma in 2024 due to asbestos exposure through his employer, we found ourselves facing one of the most difficult and emotional times our family has ever experienced. The legal process initially felt overwhelming, but from the very beginning Rebecca guided us with kindness, compassion and professionalism. Rebecca has been our main point of contact throughout the last 18 months, and she has been absolutely outstanding. She took the time to explain every stage of the process in a way we could understand, always ensuring we knew what to expect and never making us feel like just another case. She listened with empathy, answered every question with patience, and supported us through some incredibly emotional conversations. She also helped us fully understand the financial impact Glen’s diagnosis has had on our family and worked tirelessly to achieve a successful settlement for us.
